«Είμαστε, φυσικά, βαθιά ανήσυχοι για τη συνεχιζόμενη κρίση και τις επιπτώσεις της στο λαό της Σρι Λάνκα και ιδιαίτερα στους φτωχούς και τις ευάλωτες ομάδες», δήλωσε ο εκπρόσωπος του ΔΝΤ Τζέρι Ράις στους δημοσιογράφους.

Μετά από αρχικές εποικοδομητικές συνομιλίες, «είναι σαφές ότι η πολιτική και κοινωνική κατάσταση έκτακτης ανάγκης διέκοψε αυτές τις συζητήσεις», είπε.

Ο διεθνής οικονομικός οργανισμός «παρακολουθεί στενά» τις εξελίξεις εκεί και ελπίζει «σε μια επίλυση της τρέχουσας κατάστασης που θα επιτρέψει τη συνέχιση του διαλόγου μας για ένα πρόγραμμα που θα υποστηρίζεται από το ΔΝΤ», δήλωσε ο Ράις.

Οι αναταραχές ανάγκασε τον πρώην πλέον πρόεδρο Γκοταμπάγια Ρατζαπάκσα να εγκαταλείψει τη χώρα, εν μέσω δραματικών σκηνών με διαδηλωτές να καταλαμβάνουν το προεδρικό μέγαρο.

Ο Ρατζαπάκσα κατηγορείται για κακοδιαχείριση της οικονομίας της νησιωτικής χώρας σε σημείο που ξέμεινε από συνάλλαγμα για να χρηματοδοτήσει ακόμη και τις πιο βασικές εισαγωγές, δημιουργώντας μια εξαιρετικά δύσκολη κατάσταση για τους 22 εκατομμύρια κατοίκους της Σρι Λάνκα, με τέσσερις στους πέντε κατοίκους της να παραλείπουν γεύματα.

Η Σρι Λάνκα αθέτησε τον Απρίλιο την πληρωμή του εξωτερικού της χρέους ύψους 51 δισεκατομμυρίων δολαρίων και έχει σχεδόν εξαντλήσει τα ήδη λιγοστά αποθέματα βενζίνης, με την κυβέρνηση να διατάσσει το κλείσιμο μη απαραίτητων υπηρεσιών και σχολείων για να μειωθούν οι μετακινήσεις και να εξοικονομηθούν καύσιμα.

Ο Ράις δήλωσε ότι το ΔΝΤ παραμένει σε επαφή με τεχνικούς αξιωματούχους στο Κολόμπο, στο υπουργείο Οικονομικών και στην κεντρική τράπεζα, αλλά όπως και με κάθε συμφωνία βοήθειας, ένα πρόγραμμα δανείου για τη Σρι Λάνκα «θα απαιτούσε επαρκείς διαβεβαιώσεις για τη βιωσιμότητα του χρέους».
